Chinese Public Cloud Giants Account For 40% Of APAC Market

Chinese public cloud firms together account for 40 percent of the Asia Pacific (APAC) public cloud market, according to the latest available data from Synergy Research Group.

The research looked at public IaaS and PaaS revenues from Q4 2019.

While Amazon and Microsoft are the top two cloud platforms of choice in the rest of the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the leading six public cloud providers in China are all local firms. Meanwhile, in Japan, the top two public cloud players are non-Japanese despite the strong base of local technology companies.

In China, Alibaba is the leading cloud player, followed by Tencent, Baidu, Sinnet-AWS, China Telecom, and China Unicom. In Japan, Japanese firms such as Fujitsu, NTT, and Softbank also made it to the top six list.

While it currently accounts for less than a third of the worldwide market, the APAC cloud market is growing more rapidly than either the North American or EMEA markets, according to the Synergy report.

Within the APAC region, China accounts for almost a third of the public cloud market and is more than twice the size of Japan, the second-largest market. The next biggest markets by country in APAC are India, South Korea, Australia, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

“China remains a unique cloud market that is totally dominated by local companies. Beyond China every major country market is led by Amazon and Microsoft,” said John Dinsdale, a chief analyst and research director at Synergy Research Group.

“Putting China to one side, this speaks to the truly global nature of the cloud market. To become one of the leaders requires a global presence, technology smarts, a brand name that plays well in all countries, extremely deep pockets, a long-term focus and total commitment from senior management.”
