Centre labels Apple Watch as high-risk device

Apple Watch has earned a reputation as a life-saving device, with numerous stories emerging every other week about how it has saved individuals through its various health features. With each new generation, Apple has introduced more advanced health functions to its smartwatches. However, for Indian users, there is a cause for concern. The Indian government has recently taken action by issuing a ‘high risk’ warning specifically for Apple Watch users in the country.

Apple Watch Vulnerability
Ignoring this warning could lead to serious consequences for the users. The alert comes from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) under the IT Ministry, targeting users of Apple Watch with WatchOS versions earlier than 9.6. It is essential for users to take heed of this warning to ensure their safety while using the wearable device in India.

According to the government warning, several vulnerabilities have been identified in Apple watchOS. These vulnerabilities have the potential to be exploited by attackers, enabling them to execute arbitrary code, bypass security measures, escalate privileges, access sensitive information, and even cause a denial of service on the targeted system. It is crucial for users of Apple Watch with watchOS versions prior to 9.6 in India to be aware of these risks and take necessary precautions to safeguard their devices and personal information.

The presence of vulnerabilities in Apple watchOS is attributed to several factors, such as an improper memory handling error in Apple Neural Engine, an issue with improper restrictions logic in the Find My feature, errors related to memory handling or state management, and a use-after-free error in the Kernel. Additionally, there are problems with path handling validation or logic in libxpc, as well as errors in checks and memory handling in WebKit.

To protect themselves from potential exploitation and scams, it is essential for Apple Watch users to take immediate action and apply the necessary patches as specified in the Apple security advisories. By doing so, users can enhance the security of their devices and minimize the risk of falling victim to any malicious activities. Mashable India
