BSNL Seeks DoT Approval To Set Up Avionics Network To Offer In-Flight Connectivity

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has requested for an approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to set up the Indian Avionics Network (IAN) with 500 BTS in order to offer in-flight connectivity (IFC) to air passengers.

Earlier, in 2017 BSNL had partnered with Inmarsat to open Indian global satellite phone service (GSPS) gateway for telephony services to public and private companies as well as individuals. According to BSNL, this partnership is well-poised to offer IFC services.

Further, BSNL is advocating a policy regime for pan India avionics networks, which is akin to the European Aviation Network, wherein Deutsche Telekom in partnership with Inmarsat deployed ground infrastructure for hybrid satellite and telecom network with 300 long term evolution (LTE) towers.

Recently, the Committee of Secretaries (CoS) had allowed the Indian-origin satellites and gateways to offer communication services to air passengers, while the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had recommended on opening up the airspace to foreign satellites for providing onboard Internet services. – Tele Net
