BSNL demands compensation of Rs 99 crore from DoT

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has demanded a Rs 99 crore financial compensation from the government for the delay in 9000 sites being commissioned under the 4G saturation project.

In May 2023, BSNL had placed an order for deployment of a 4G network across India for 100,000 sites, for Rs.15,000 crore on a consortium that includes Tata Consultancy Services Limited and Tejas Networks.

The consortium has not been able to instal and commission the core network in four zones as stipulated in the order in the requisite delivery time, with the result that BSNL needs to incur additional O&M cost of Rs 55000 per site, per quarter for the next six months for 9000 sites.

Reena Malhotra, GM (NWP-SP), BSNL, has written to USOF that is providing funding for the 4G saturation project to establish mobile sites and towers to serve areas not connected by the private telcos. “As per the delivery and commissioning progress of Evolved Node B (eNB) from TCS/ITI, it is anticipated that there will be a delay in BTS installation at around 9,000 sites where BSNL will be required to start O&M,” says the letter.
