IAFI proposes ubiquitous service requirements for 6G standards in the ITU

ITU-APT Foundation of India (IAFI) participated in the ITU Global meeting which is preparing the 6G standards as a part of the global 6G standardization work. IAFI has also partnered with other 6G interest groups in India and elsewhere, including the 5GIF in India and with World Wireless Research Forum globally. In this meeting, India has proposed a new usage scenario for 6G for providing ubiquitous connectivity to connect the unconnected in rural and remote areas as a new requirement for the proposed 6G framework. One of the main pillars of this contribution was how 6G could be the next big step in connecting the unconnected and providing ubiquitous connectivity, as a follow-up of the LMLC concept that India proposed to the world and got included in the 5G global standards. The ITU meeting appreciated the Indian administration proposal recommending Ubiquitous Connectivity as an overarching element of 6G that resonates with the UN SDG goal of connecting the unconnected. The meeting agreed to continue further discussions on this unique proposal in the next ITU meeting in June 2023.

Commenting on the outcome of the ITU meeting, Mr. Bharat Bhatia, President of IAFI noted that “the new proposal by India for meeting the key connectivity needs of rural and remote areas assumes great significance, given that India had contributed substantially to the development of the 5G rural connectivity standard, called LMLC. He further noted that IAFI, along with its partners will continue to support this Indian vision at the ITU and elsewhere. He also pointed out that in the earlier IAFI letter to Shri Ashwani Vaishnaw, Minister of Communications and IT, we had pointed out the 6G Research and Standardization work that is happening globally and the opportunities this new technology will bring, including immersive communication services using new wearable glasses and gadgets, interactions with digital twins at faraway places, internet of senses, and extensive use of Artificial Intelligence. Considering the overarching benefits that 6G will bring, IAFI had requested the DoT to set up a forum to harmonize 6G technology development, preferably outside Govt. control. Countries like the USA, Korea, China, and Japan have published their vision for 6G through their industry forums. The ITU process of 6G standards development is a longer one going until the year 2030 and includes external standards development organizations like the 3GPP contributing to it.
