BIF conducts a National Workshop on neutral DCI in buildings

Broadband India Forum (BIF) hosted today a National workshop on “Neutral Digital Connectivity Infrastructure (DCI) in buildings” at The Lalit, New Delhi.

The workshop commenced with a curtain raiser, followed by the Inaugural Session which featured prominent personalities from the Digital Ecosystem.

Dr. R.S. Sharma former Chairman of TRAI was the Chief Guest, who during his tenure as TRAI Chairman from 2015-2020, took several initiatives in this regard. This included “Recommendations for sharing of Common Telecom Infrastructure inside buildings, First Monogram (which was a sort of a primer) for urban planners, architects, service providers to boost in-building connectivity and ICT infrastructure within smart buildings to make them future-ready, initiating inclusion of Addendum to Model building Bye-laws on DCI in-building in the National Building Code. TRAI was also instrumental in initiating a Consultation process on Rating of Buildings for Digital Connectivity.

Additionally, Shri V. Suresh, former CMD of HUDCO, provided an introductory address, and Shri Mahendra Srivastava, Principal Advisor at TRAI, shared his insights as a Guest of Honour. The event also was represented by Smt. Isha Kalia, Director, AMRUT, MoHUA, who spoke about how the Ministry could help in proliferating the awareness about the benefits of Digital Connectivity to all the States. BIF’s esteemed Chairperson, Smt. Aruna Sundararajan, IAS (Retd.) and former Chairperson of DCC & Secretary, Telecom, delivered a special address during the inaugural session. The workshop featured four focused sessions on DCI, each involving renowned speakers and domain experts from diverse backgrounds, including government officials, public sector undertakings, building developers, industry leaders, academia, and civil society representatives. Key areas in these sessions include:

  • Quality of Experience of DCI in buildings: a Consumer Perspective.
  • DCI, Technology, and in-building solutions (IBS) and Standards.
  • Provisioning and Implementation of DCI in states/UTs: Addendum to Building Bye-Laws, the status of guidelines/ implementation in States/UTs, and Certification (OC/CC) thereof
  • Role of DCI in buildings for Smart Buildings/ Smart Cities

In his Inaugural address, R S Sharma, Former TRAI Chairman welcomed the continuity of initiatives being taken up by the Government, the Regulator, and the industry with regard to understanding the challenges of in-building connectivity and to suggest ways and means to overcome them. He added, “creation of awareness among various stakeholders for implementing the concept of neutral DCI in buildings is going to help in proliferation of accessible of quality and affordable broadband for all”

In her address, Director, AMRUT, Smt. Isha Kalia from MoHUA said, “This awareness workshop was very important in the light of increasing awareness about digital connectivity inside buildings amongst the huge ecosystem of builders, developers, architects, etc all of whom need to come on board so that we can implement uniform practices and procedures in-buildings to ensure that we provide the highest quality of digital connectivity in-buildings.

Aruna Sundararajan, Chairperson, BIF while welcoming all the participants and speakers of today’s workshop, spoke about the relevance of such workshops to bring together all stakeholders of the ecosystem viz. builders, architects, developers, Telecom Service Providers, and the consumers viz. buyers & tenants of the property, to ensure uniform and quality digital connectivity in building.
