Taiwanese operator Asia Pacific Telecom (APT), a unit of Hon Hai Precision Industry, reports that it has received the regulator’s approval to build a 5G trial network in preparation for a commercial launch in 2020. APT is the first telecom to obtain permission from the National Communications Commission to deploy 5G technology, Taipei Times reports. APT plans to complete its 5G trial network deployment in less than 6 months, and start testing the service by end-2018.
Trials will take place in Taipei’s Neihu District, New Taipei City’s Tucheng District and at the Hsinchu campus of National Chiao Tung University, APT said. The 5G project was jointly proposed by Asia Pacific and Hon Hai Technology Group, along with National Chiao Tung University. – Telecompaper
