Anatel Approves 5G Spectrum Bands

The president of Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel), Leonardo de Morais, has confirmed that the bidding for 5G spectrum will take place in the first quarter of 2020. He pointed out that the auction will be the biggest in the history of the agency and will involve the 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz and 26 GHz bands.

Morais was speaking at the Telebrasil Panel 2019. His comments were followed by a statement from Anatel saying that it has approved the release of the 2.3-2.4 GHz and 3.3-3.6 GHz frequency bands for mobile services. The new spectrum management plan was designed to ensure technical flexibility for operators and opens the way to starting preparations for the auction, the regulator said.

At its latest meeting, the regulator also deliberated on the use of the 450 MHz band for satellite (VSAT) services for up to 12,400 schools. It also approved a public consultation on the Plan of Attribution, Destination and Distribution of Frequency Ranges in Brazil. The consultation will run for 30 days after its publication in the Official Gazette.―Telecompaper
