Airtel Pips Jio, Vodafone Idea On Some Parameters

In terms of service quality of mobile networks, Bharti Airtel has outperformed the rivals Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio in four out of five metrics, according to a study.

Airtel took the top spot among analysis of several use cases such as HD group video calls, 1080p video streaming, social media usage, web browsing, download throughput and latency, according to a report by Canada-based data platform Tutela.

Airtel stood first in the ‘Excellent Consistent Quality’ by a margin of 10% while the second spot was a draw between Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio.

“This means that Airtel users have a network connection good enough for a range of use cases including 1080p video streaming, HD group video calls and realtime gaming one in 10 times more often than users on the next-best networks,” the report said.

However the gap was less dramatic in day-to-day use cases such as SD video streaming, web browsing and social media sharing with Airtel still being the leader.

The report also highlighted that Jio, which only provides 4G access with higher penetration than the rivals did not necessarily lead to it delivering a better performance.

“Jio’s all-4G network is outperformed by Airtel, where users still spend about 10% of time on 3G, and competes most closely with Vodafone Idea where users are on 3G as much as 27% of the time,” the report said.

Jio was also behind top speeds of download for Airtel (7.4 Mbps) and upload speed of Vodafone Idea (3.7 Mbps).

Tutela’s examined the current state of mobile network experience in India, using 573 billion measurements collected between August 1st, 2019 and January 31st, 2020 including over 65 million speed tests, and more than 900 million latency tests.
