Adobe India Head Kulmeet Bawa Quits

Kulmeet Bawa, MD, Adobe india and South Asia, who has been leading the tech company’s business in the region since June 2016, has put in his papers. According to a company statement, he is quitting to explore opportunities outside.

Bawa is an unusual corporate leader, having served the Indian Army in the Armoured Corps for 12 years, prior to switching careers. The National Defence Academy alumnus quit the army in 2002, and then did his MBA in marketing from the Indian School of Business.

Bawa had stints with Sun Microsystems and Microsoft prior to joining Adobe in 2012, where he headed sales.

In 2016, when then MD Umang Bedi left to join Facebook, Bawa was elevated to the top job, and according to the company, significantly grew the business here.

Adobe in a statement said that it is actively in search of a new MD for India and hopes to make an announcement soon. As is the practice for several tech firms, Adobe has two MDs for the region – while Shanmugh Natarajan leads R&D and products in the country, Bawa led field operations.

India is a significant geography for the San Jose headquartered tech firm, whose two business verticals are Digital Media (the Photoshop and Acrobat family) — which contributes 68 percent of total revenue — and Digital Experiences (marketing cloud etc), which accounts for 22 percent of total revenue.

Outside of North America, India is the company’s second largest base.

Earlier this year, Bawa had said that Adobe sees strong growth in India because the country is led by a large population of millennials, and is turning into a mobile-only geography, where better digital experiences matter.―The Hindu Business Line
