5G Phones To Become Mainstream In 2023

Shipments of 5G smartphones are expected to surpass those of 4G models to become the mainstream in 2023, according to market watchers.

China’s second-tier handset makers, following in the step of their first-tier rivals, are expected to begin rolling out 5G models in the second quarter of 2020, fueling 5G phone shipment momentum, said the watchers.

These second-tier players, while currently exhibiting mostly 4G models at the ongoing Global Sources Mobile Electronics 2019 in Hong Kong, are developing 5G phones, ready to mass producing them when their technology becomes more mature and components supply becomes more sufficient in the second quarter of 2020, said the observers visiting the electronics fair.

Shipments of 5G phones are expected to reach 180 million units in 2020, accounting for 13.2% of global handset shipments, a senior analyst at Canalys said in a speech delivered at the fair.

The ratio of 5G phones to global handset shipments is likely to climb to 52% in 2023, added at the analyst.

Prices of 5G models are likely to fall below US$654 when China’s second-tier players begin to roll out 5G phones in the second quarter of 2020, estimate market sources.―Digitimes
