5G hits the spot for mainland giants

The three mainland telecom giants have recorded more than 1.3 billion 5G customers.

China Mobile (0941) said it had 202,000 additional customers last month from a month ago, bringing the total to 966.6 million. The number of 5G package customers reached 495.13 million, it said.

China Unicom (Hong Kong) (0762) said it recorded 795 million “Big Connectivity” subscribers while the number of 5G package subscribers was 179.7 million, the operational statistics report in May said.

And China Telecom (0728) has 224.47 million 5G package subscribers with the number of mobile subscribers for the month of May increasing by 83,000 to 381.15 million.

The increase of 5G package subscribers for the month was 7.04 million. The cumulative increase of 5G package subscribers for the year is 36.67 million, according to its report in May.

Meanwhile, the number of handsets sold on the mainland dropped 9.4 percent in May, but sales of 5G handsets surged 6 percent, said a report from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.
