55,000 Km Optical Fibre Network Set To Be Laid In Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu FibreNet Corporation (TANFINET) would implement a 55,000-km optical fibre network under BharatNet and Tamil Net Project, said minister for information technology M Manikandan in the assembly on Wednesday.

The network will ensure at least 1 Gbps connectivity to 12,524 village panchayats, 528 town panchayats, 121 municipalities and 15 corporations, he said, adding, this would be a game changer for the larger benefit of the people enabling them to do various official works from the comfort of their homes. The minister said this in a policy note tabled before the assembly.

The government has selected six villages in Tirunelveli, Dharmapuri, Villupuram, Salem, Karur and Virudhunagar districts to implement in the first phase of Amma e-Gramam project at a cost of 1.62 crore, he said. It would facilitate the villagers to benefit tele-medicine, tele-education, Wifi hotspot, skill development, digital knowledge, said the minister.

Free internet facility would be given to 366 government higher secondary schools in educationally backward blocks at an estimate cost of 9.06 crore. The government has sanctioned 1.23 crore for implementing it in 50 government higher secondary schools through TACTV. ―Times of India
