GoGreen: Take a Green Pill
Wednesday, 10 June 2009

An estimated 63 percent of Indian IT organizations have deployed green server rooms to increase energy efficiency or have a pilot project underway. More than 55 percent of Indian companies are going to, or have already commissioned third-party environmental audits, purchased emission credits, or have made improvements in their supply chain efficiency to reduce energy consumption. Alcatel-Lucent launched several initiatives during Earth Week to spotlight its efforts toward reducing the company's carbon footprint and to establish an green-friendly attitude throughout its global operations. Its employees are encouraged to turn down thermostats, separate trash for recycling, reduce commuting by car, and avoid printing documents. IBM will design and build two green data centers that can achieve 20 percent savings on power for Sistema Shyam Teleservices or MTS.

Hospitals are also becoming green crusaders. Some of the organizations that help promote more environment-conscious health care facilities are Global Health and Safety Initiative, Health Care without Harm, and Practice Green Health. The American Hospital Association signed a memorandum of understanding with the Environmental Protection Agency several years ago to phase out the use of mercury. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, while building a new children's hospital due for completion in 2009, is paying special attention to issues such as materials used to cover and clean floors. Closer home, AIIMS has set up an internal committee responsible for sensitizing the staff besides monitoring the hospital's green initiatives and dealing with bio-medical waste disposal. However, these hospitals deplore a lack of R&D in the country. The fact that most green solutions are sold by MNCs with fancy cost structures and are not available in the indigenous market is a cause of concern.
