Data Center Solution for Defense Sector
Sunday, 17 May 2009

Client : A leading defense organization in India

Project : 13 data centers at various locations across India. Project awarded to Rittal on a turn key basis

Industry : Defense

Challenge

The challenges included providing a safe IT security room, space optimization, thermal management inside the racks and security for the critical servers. This data center had to be equipped with hundreds of high-end servers/blade servers to cater to the requirements. Rittal had a challenge to accommodate such a huge quantity of servers inside the server racks under a single roof with better thermal management for the high density servers wherein the heat dissipation is very high. In this scenario, the customer's requirement was a world class high quality racking solution along with high load bearing capacity in the range of 800-1000 kilograms.

The Lampertz and Rittal Solution

The client offered the vendor an existing building in which the vendor had the task to set up the data center from scratch. The Lampertz Security Room - LSR 18.6E was first set up. This involves a modular, expandable room constructed out of steel cassette elements for walls, ceiling and floor elements, with control panel, security door, overpressure slide, lighting installation, flasher/acoustic alarm transmitter, emergency lamps 230 V AC + 24V DC (batteries), and round cable ducts DN 200 including closing of the cable ducts. The safety door system is a highly fire resistant, multi-layer steel door with a circumferential fire and seal rebate. It is also equipped with door closing delay, to delay the automatic closure of the door in the event of an alarm. The delay can be adjusted.

This data center was equipped with a wide range of systems such as:

IP based CCTV surveillance system; CMC TC (intelligent room monitoring system); Early fire detection system (VESDA); UL Listed'intelligent addressable fire alarm and gas release system; FM200 based fire suppression system; Raised false flooring with antistatic laminate and perforated tiles; Biometric based access control system; UPS distribution panel; Distribution panel for precision air conditioner; Precision air conditioner'floor discharge type (N+1); Industrial type power socket with complete electrical cabling from UPS DB; Cable trough data /power; and DIS - DATA SAFE S13 model.

Rittal supplied large power distribution enclosures equipped with bus-bar systems, component adopters, and on load isolators to cater to the power distribution needs of the data center. Rittal offered server racks that can withstand load of 800-1000 kilograms. The entire supply and installation was done by Rittal India with an optimized solution for a large amount of servers. The front and rear doors for these racks were fully perforated (the perforated percentage was 80 percent). By using this solution, the best thermal management was achieved within the data center/racks even after housing high density servers for the entire height of the rack. For critical servers, Rittal provided racks with electromagnetic lock that operates by using Rittal's CMC-TC for access control that can be remotely managed and monitored through network with a single IP address.
