The 17th Convergence India 2009 international exhibition and conference, organized at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, concluded successfully on 20 March, 2009. The event, inaugurated on 18th March, by Shri Siddhartha Behura, Secretary, Department of Telecom, was a three day long showcase of innovative solutions, which are driving the current phase of growth in India's information and communications technology (ICT) segment or are full of potential to become the preferred choice in their category. Shri Kuldeep Goyal, CMD, BSNL and Shri R.S.P Sinha, CMD, MTNL were felicitated as Guests of Honor. Exhibitors from 20 countries and over 400 participants converged for an exciting showcase of cutting edge technologies in telecom, mobility, broadcast, cable, satellite, entertainment, information technology, and information security. The presence of three country pavilions'China, Taiwan, and USA, emphasized the growing interest of international players in accessing the Indian market. The event saw the release of a White Paper on the ICT industry, presented by Mr. Rajeev Karwal, Founder Director, Milagrow. We spoke to some of the participants about their plans for the Indian market for FY 2009-10.Here's what some of them had in store for the Indian market: "Convergent Communications focuses on networking solutions and distribution. We are working very closely with our technology providers to offer new products on an ongoing basis. As master distributor of Motorola's wireless broadband, we should be able to launch some interesting products in wireless broadband backbone and access areas including OFDM backbone products. We are also working towards launching a service model for network security aimed towards ISPs and corporates. For the year 2009-10, we expect market and global scenario to improve though it will also be a challenging year, and we foresee at least 12 percent growth in our revenues." Anil Gupta "Besides regular TML (transmission lines), BSA (base station antennas), and MWA (Microwave links) products, our focus will be to win newer designs in site optimization products which are becoming very critical in today's environment. Typically with towers getting crowded, we see a need to implement efficient filtering solutions at sites and also share part of the site infrastructures where possible. We have some exciting products already in our product portfolio and many more in the pipe line in order to address the challenge of the introduction of new frequencies on already crowded towers. RFS' new products have multiple innovations in place, including weight and size advantages, which are putting RFS in a driver seat with the OEMs and operators. Besides offering high performance products, we also work to reduce the logistics and inventory cost of our customers. With an end-to-end approach, we are setting up a platform for advanced logistical services covering the whole range of RFS solutions, with the key objective to provide our clients in India with the speedy deployment capability they require. Furthermore, we aim at providing, in one single delivery, all the items required to build the sites, thus avoiding unnecessary delays. RFS' green initiatives cover all aspects of our product life cycle management, transportation and logistics, industrial operations, and innovations such as autonomous cellular sites (with solar panels or wind turbines), and cellular sites energy optimization initiatives."Kuldeep Tikoo "Teracom Limited is a well diversified integrated product and services company catering to the emerging requirements of the power & telecom sector in India and other emerging markets. Teracom, apart from domestic projects, is also executing international projects. Teracom is committed to delivering the highest quality products to our customers, from our ISO 9001 and ISO 14000 certified manufacturing facilities to our outstanding engineering validation process. All of Teracom products undergo rigorous testing as well as reliability testing to ensure they operate at peak performance levels throughout the product's guaranteed lifetime. Teracom has been growing 100 percent in every year and always been in profit. Our revenues for FY 2007-08 touched Rs. 512 crore. For FY 08-09 we closed at approximately Rs. 750 crore. Teracom has emerged as the largest Indian vendor of CPEs and has recently secured the most competitive position in the largest bid for ADSL2+ CPE against stiff international competition. Teracom is expected to receive a contract shortly for supply of 4 million units in a phased manner. Teracom is also the largest Indian supplier of wireless access devices having supplied more than 4 Million units of wireless access devices like FWP/FWT/NIC (network interface cards) based on state-of-the-art CDMA/GSM/EvDO technologies. Teracom has also bagged the most competitive position in the path breaking project to provide FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) solutions based on GE-PON. This is the first time such a deployment of the state-of-the-art technology would happen in India."Rajeev Venkat "NuTek is growing at a rate of over 50 percent y-o-y in terms of revenues and profits and is also looking to expand its geographic base. NuTek presently operates in all 23 Telecom Circles of India, has established a subsidiary in Hong Kong and another in Turkey, eyeing the global markets. It is actively looking at growing inorganically through acquisitions in the African and European markets as well. With over 50 percent CAGR, NuTek is looking at closing FY2010 with a top line of Rs. 2,900-3,000 million. The target consumer segments are the telecom operators, equipment manufacturers, and 3rd party passive infrastructure leasing companies. Across the world, incumbent and new-entrant operators are investing in EDGE, UMTS, HSPA, EwVDO, and WIMAX technologies to offer true 3G and 4G services delivering high speed broadband and voice. These new generation networks ideally need to interface with a wide variety of application services and equipment not seen in previous generation networks. India also has been witnessing tremendous growth and new innovations in the field of telecom. The constant need for networks up gradation, coupled with the breathtaking subscriber additions, calls for the carriers and OEMs to focus on their core competencies to keep their businesses profitable. With over 15 years of experience in delivering telecom turnkey solutions, NuTek is just the right partner to help its customers achieve this goal." Vineet Goel "AEM is a 33 year old company, with core competence in R&D and manufacturing in embedded technologies. We have been working with the Indian Air Force and Indian Railways since last 30 years. AEM works through 6 different work groups, such as Avionics, Defense Communication, Railways, Telemetry, VOIP/VOD, and RFID Solutions. We have successfully developed FTTH (Fiber to Home) solution and VOD (Video on Demand Solutions). We have firm plans to marketing these solutions primarily to corporate and housing societies and our strategy for achieving our targets will be to work through partners. We are scouting for partners, who can further take our solutions to last mile. We anticipate doing about Rs. 60 crore as turnover in the next year. We will further invest more in R&D activities and our management firmly believes in proactive development process." Upender Bhati

"At Convergence India, RAD launched the Made for India LRS-16 advanced modem rack, a product conceived, designed, and manufactured according to leading Indian telecom providers' specifications. The product concept is so successful that it is also being launched worldwide. RAD is ratcheting up its operations in India, adding new marketing and sales staff and opening an office in New Delhi. We expect to increase our sales revenues three-fold during the next three years and increase our market share in every possible segment of Access Networking Applications'. RAD's multidisciplinary R&D division is focusing on cost-reduction for all existing product lines as well as addressing the unique technology requirements for new market segments. The Indian telecom growth story is very robust. The current economic slowdown shall not deter this growth beyond a few quarters. Certainly the global situation is a unique opportunity for India (and therefore Indian telecom) because it is accepted worldwide that India is one of the least affected countries, and therefore investor confidence will revive soonest for India. The major challenge in Indian market for us is to build cost-effective networking solutions' that will continually provide a healthy RoI (return on investment) to our telco/carrier customers despite their falling ARPU amidst stiff competition from all local and international vendors. We have an active and dynamic range of over 250 diverse access products that cater to the Indian market."
