The National Optical Fiber Network project by Government of India is aimed at connecting around 250,000 gram panchayats in the country. In spite of 11 lakh km of optical fiber cable (OFC) laid out by the public and private sector companies in India, this stops short of the gram panchayat at the grass root level and is available only at the block level.
