The empowered group of ministers (EGoM) on telecom, in its first meeting on July 12, under its new chairman, home minister P Chidambaram, could not take a decision on the two contentious issues of reserve price for the coming spectrum auctions and a one-time levy on incumbent operators for the spectrum they hold.
Telecom minister Kapil Sibal, said the government would approach the SC to seek an extension of the deadline. The next meeting of the EGoM is expected to take place on either July 16. On the matter of the rollout obligations, the EGoM has asked the DoT to look for a middle ground between the currently applicable rollout obligations, which were seen as too mild, and the newer ones suggested by TRAI, which are viewed as too stringent. - Communications Today Bureau |
