Tremendous Growth Potential Ahead
Wednesday, 16 May 2012
“Mobile broadband will fuel the telecom industry for the next five years and is set to be the engine of growth for the industry.” Ranjan Sharma,
Director-Wireless, ZTE India
ImageThe telecom industry globally as well as in India is poised to have some marginal growth in mobile voice in the next five years. There is still a tremendous growth potential in mobile broadband and subscription for this is expected to be around four times of what we have at present, i.e., around 2 billion subscribers by 2014/15. Hence, mobile broadband will fuel the telecom industry for the next five years and is set to be the engine of growth for the industry.

Mobile broadband requires high data capacities for higher penetration of smart phones. Data traffic is set to grow exponentially. Operator revenues are not going to grow proportionately; hence, we need spectral-efficient and high-data-rate capable technologies, which will significantly reduce the cost of carrying this to the network. The end-user experience will drive the LTE technology. With LTE, the broadband speeds are enhanced making latency (delay) at very low milliseconds levels, which will give an enriched experience to the end user, hence driving the LTE usage and demand.
To summarize, mobile broadband will be the major driver along with reduced cost of delivering data in the given amount of spectrum.

On challenges
End-to-end equipment maturity. LTE is new and it will slowly gain maturity level. As TDD would be the first to be introduced in India, there are many vendors who do not have full-scale experience of handling TDD technology.

Terminal variety and maturity.
Terminals are bottlenecks for most of the new technology initiatives. This is a challenge for LTE as well.

Transmission. For broadband technology like LTE, transmission is a bottleneck. The current deployed networks need to be scaled up in terms of capacity and in some cases need for technolgy upgradtion is there.

LTE is the technology of the future and will enjoy economies of scale. LTE will co-exist with 3G and will act as an enabling technology for mobile broadband, especially where throughput requirements are very high.

On growth plans for 2012-13
ZTE will have a focused approach in the wireless domain, especially the new technologies like LTE.  We work with all prospective customers and operators to provide best-in-class solutions and help build a strong eco system. We plan to increase our footprints and market share in India through new technologies like LTE as we are a late entrant in the wireless market in India but we are confident of taking a lead role as we have distinct advantages to provide best-in-class products and solutions, strong R&D support, and customization capabilities.

ZTE has seven percent basic patent share in LTE standard and plans to increase this share further. ZTE has extensively invested in R&D for LTE and has more than 4000 employees working across the globe in 15 R&D centers to develop LTE products. Overall, ZTE has won 30 contracts for LTE commercial application and has deployed test networks in cooperation with more than 100 operators across the globe. ZTE’s target is to make full use of this fact and get more than 30 percent share in the Indian market. ZTE hopes to play an active role with each of the players. The company hopes to translate global experience to get new horizons in LTE.
