"Nokia has set a goal to further cut CO2e emissions from its own facilities by 30 percent by 2020 and is expected to go even further, beyond its operations, harnessing the power of over 1 billion people using Nokia devices." Poonam Kaul, Director-Corporate Communications, Nokia India
To begin with, the company's approach and strategy is to continuously improve the environmental sustainability of all its products, instead of introducing one-off green devices. Ensuring that all products throughout the portfolio fulfill the strict environmental requirements makes a bigger difference and gives a greater variety of environmental-friendly phones for people to choose from. Nokia regularly introduces eco hero devices that have the widest range of environmental features, as well as new innovations, which are then gradually implemented across the product portfolio. The company operates one of the largest voluntary mobile phone recycling schemes in the world through its Take Back campaigns. In India, Nokia started its take-back and recycling activities in 2008 and has since been running over 1400 recycling points at its care centers and at retail outlets. The company's School Environmental Engagement Program was a pilot program launched 15 schools in Delhi in July 2011. The program has since evolved and now reaches 14 states covering more than 2500 schools in India. With this program, Nokia aims to create environmental change agents and through which stimulate environmental actions in the society. On maximizing energy efficiencyEven during the manufacturing stage, Nokia improves the energy efficiency of its products. Improving the energy efficiency during the use phase is one of the company's focus areas when designing a new product. The company strives to minimize the environmental impact of its products, solutions, and operations, and also collaborates with its suppliers to improve the environmental performance of its supply chain. The company has been continuously investigating new technologies and improved solutions for better energy efficiency, including alternative technologies. Leading the way in removing substances of concern, since 2006 Nokia's devices, chargers, and headsets have been PVC-free; since 2009, the company has been phasing out brominated and chlorinated compounds and antimony trioxide; and since the beginning of 2010, all new devices from the company have been free of these substances. Toxics Link, I-Dream, TERI Press, WWF, and IUCN are some of the company's partners for its environment and conservation programs. Nokia has set a goal to further cut CO2e emissions by 30 percent from its own facilities by 2020 and is expected to go even further, beyond its operations, harnessing the power of over 1 billion people using Nokia devices. The company aims at enabling and empowering people to make positive environmental and social changes in their lives. |
