Case Study: Installation of True Multisource Hybrid Energy Solution for a BTS Site
Friday, 09 December 2011
Client: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.
Vendor: Delta India
Project: Hybrid Power Solution for a Telecom Site in West India
Industry: Telecom

Given the challenge of integrating multiple power sources at a BTS site and then to prove commercial viability of the solution – Delta decided to pursue this project with a major telecom operator in India.

Solution Approach and Design
  • The site audit team did initial feasibility of the site (studied wind and solar radiation profile)
  • The solution engineering team designed the complete solution
    • Delta’s solar system designed to power BTS during sun hours (no battery charging)
    • Delta’s wind system designed to charge batteries (fast-charge special batteries)
    • Delta’s site management and control system (SMCS) used to integrate multiple sources (solar, wind, and DG) with remote programmable priority setting
    • Delta’s NOC used for true remote management (monitor, manage, and control) and data analysis
  • The project team including civil, mechanical, installation, and commissioning engineers executed the project.
    • The site operations and service team managed the site performance for 120 days on 24 × 7 basis.
Observations (90 days average)
  • DG run hours = 244 minutes/day
  • Wind power generation (>70 percent) =  86 minutes/day
  • Wind power generation (50–70 percent) = 74 minutes/day
  • Wind power generation (30–50 percent) = 210 minutes/day
  • Solar power generation = 330 minutes/day
  • Battery discharge = 496 minutes/day
  • Remote site upgrade in 120 days = 6 upgrades
  • Site visits needed in 90 days = 3 visits
  • Site outage in 90 days = 0 minute
Result
  • 58 percent reduction in site operation and management cost
  • Reductions in DG run hours from 18 to 4
  • Commercial viability of solution (RoI of system complements accelerated depreciation of assets)
Achievements
  • Integrated multiple sources of power (solar system, wind source, and DG)
  • Managed sources based on best available source (true performance); source priority setting
  • Recorded all energy data through true remote management system
  • Derived sweet spot for best performance based on physical data analysis
  • True remote upgrade of site from NOC (without human intervention at site) to test the condition
